The class will offer basic beekeeping information for beginner beekeepers to enjoy a successful first year of beekeeping. The basic information includes the life cycle of honey bees, purchasing equipment and bees, management of bees from installation in the hive to preparing the colony to survive winter, and the control of common honey bee pests and diseases.
Class fees of $75/person, $100/family, and $50/youth will provide beginner beekeepers with the Beekeeping in Northern Climates manual, hand-outs, lunch and snacks, one year membership to the NWIABKA, one year membership to the Iowa Honey Producers Association, hive tool, Varroa mite testing kit, monthly Zoom meetings, and mentoring services.
The NWIABKA is committed to assisting beginner beekeepers to succeed at beekeeping by hosting monthly second Thursday of the month Zoom meetings, March through September. Members of the NWIABKA receive the In the Hive newsletter, can attendin-person meetings at bee yards, have access to group texting service, and be emailed weekly colony management tips. On May 18th is the Association’s annual outdoor classroom in a bee yard where beekeepers can practice basic hands-on beekeeping skills with honey bees.
